School learning environment designs harmonize with curriculums

The Denver Public Schools Learning Landscape program creates outdoor play and learning environments unique to the goals of individual elementary schools. Designed to be a community planning effort, playground elements are themed to support the school’s curriculum, and include age appropriate play pits and equipment that challenge motor skills and promote socialization. The curriculum at Steele Elementary has a science focus and the only planetarium in the Denver school system. The playground designed by Davis Partnership for this school supports the science emphasis by providing a sundial inside a classroom vegetable garden, providing children a chance to learn how to tell time with the sun while growing vegetables. Survey markers along a bike trail lay out the constellations seen in the night sky over Denver. Dye-cut panels mounted to the perimeter fence show the phases of the moon. [Read More]
