Anythink Libraries serves the residents of Adams County, Colorado with a vision to be a catalyst for innovation, where “people are happy, healthy, safe and smart”. They view their libraries as community assets that provide children and families delightful opportunities “to learn about anything under the sun in the most beautiful, comfortable spaces”.

Last Friday, library Executive Director Mark Fink and Branch Manager Maria Mayo-Peaseley hosted members of Thornton City Council, City officials, Library District Trustees, Colorado Public Radio, and the Denver Post for a sneak-peek at their latest project, the Anythink Nature Library. Set to open in August 2026, it will be a place to learn about, in, with, and for the beauty and biodiversity of Colorado’s eastern plains.

The library’s design is grounded in the principles of the Environmental Kinship Guide that “everything in the natural world is interrelated and that humans are a part of this a cohabitors”. Sited on 15 acres adjacent to 140 acres of open space, the library was inspired by the land itself, the Environmental Kinship Guide, insights from their Indigenous Advisory Council, and community feedback.

The design is distinguished by a complex entry structure and curvilinear design. Once inside, the central clerestory spine and huge organically shaped skylights fill the space with natural light. It features the following to inspire curiosity, connection, and access to the outdoors:

  • An art and sciences lab for nature-based creation and experimentation
  • Interior and exterior boulders for climbing and play
  • Water exploration and outdoor mud zone
  • A sunroom and darkroom for active and meditative experiences
  • Exterior gardens for passive and hands-on learning opportunities
  • Open-air “kinship garden” within the library to connect with nature through art and ritual
  • Café with indoor/outdoor service and seating
  • An accessible one-mile loop trail and trailhead linking directly to the 140-acre Aylor Trail system
  • A nature-focused collection and outdoor gear available for checkout
  • An emphasis on programming with local partners such as CSU Extension, Latino Outdoors Colorado, and Denver Museum of Nature & Science
