Indoor Practice Facility for Top Tier Track program in Alamosa Colorado

One of the elite collegiate track programs in America, Adams State University now has an indoor practice facility commensurate with its’ high caliber athletes and coaches deemed the High Altitude Events Center. Located in the San Luis valley of southern Colorado at an elevation above 7,000 feet, the harsh climate is not always conducive to outdoor training for track and field events. The existing indoor field house lacked the appropriate dimensions within which proper indoor training and NCAA Division 2 events could be held. The new High Altitude Events Center provides a suitable interior training environment under the protection and buffer of a permanent, yet economical, air-supported structure. The design team worked with representatives of Xcel Energy’s Energy Design Assistance (EDA) Program allowing the university to make well-informed decisions to balance first cost options with long-term operational expenses.

The High Altitude Events Center accommodates a 6-lane, 200 meter track, jumping events, and an artificial turf infield. Toilet rooms and a vehicular maintenance air-lock are also included. Additionally, the project scope included the resurfacing of an existing 400 meter outdoor track at Rex Stadium and the re-purposing of the existing field house for basketball, volleyball, and other miscellaneous pre-event warm-up and post-event cool-down functions.
