The replacement Grand River Hospital’s Care Center includes the design of a 52-bed nursing home with an 11-bed transitional care/rehabilitation unit. The architecture provides access to daylighting and views, intimate outdoor spaces, and relates to the scale of surrounding homes. Materials were selected based on the existing hospital to bring in more a residential materials palette. The concept focuses on de-institutionalizing the nursing home by creating a more home-like experience. The spaces are divided into multiple sizes of groups which allows for an intimate residential experience. Neighborhood group spaces are shared by the residents, and the main hall can accommodate the entire facility when larger presentations are planned. These concepts allow varied social opportunities and flexibility within the nursing home design.
